How to Debate on a Comments Thread and Not Sound Like a Moron Tip #8: No One Can Waste Your Time But You

If ever a poster wants to alert others on a comments thread that they're dealing with a card-carrying idiot, they can always throw out this phrase...

"I can't believe I just wasted my time answering this post."

or

"Quit wasting my time with your ignorance."

There are many variations of course; those were just examples.  The theme, however, is always the same--accusing someone else of wasting your time because you answered their post.  This doesn't even come close to being clever.  It's just a way to post a sniffy put-down to people the poster perceives as ignorant dolts and pitching it as though others are forcibly compelling the poster to answer their stupidity.  It's as though others have cruelly burdened the poster with the responsibility of enlightening the rest of us, robbing him or her of precious moments that could have been spent playing Mafia Wars or updating their profile picture on MySpace.

Is someone holding a gun to their heads, forcing them to respond to the comments thread?  Is the Apocalypse going to take place if they don't?  Will God kill a kitten for every post they refuse to answer?  None of these scenarios seem terribly likely.

There's only one person responsible for wasting your time; that would be you.

News of the Stupid: The Schizophrenic Nanny State

The nanny state's really outdone itself this time.  Forbidding a grown woman and her 12 year old kid from engaging in a health-conscious, non-polluting activity--riding his bike to school.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,559460,00.html

When I was in elementary school, many eons ago when dinosaurs roamed the earth, kids were allowed to ride their bikes to school once they hit third grade.  I walked home from school every sunny day from the time I was seven until I graduated high school.  I was never once hit by a car or accosted by perverts in windowless vans looking for lost puppies.

How did people my age grow up to be such a bunch of terrified weenies?
